Sport and Chiropractic

Chiropractic can give your athletic endeavors an edge. Martial arts injury

All martial arts are physically demanding and hazardous. Injuries are seen throughout the spectrum of expertise. Participants are the most likely to sustain sprains and soft-tissue injuries in mixed martial art kick boxing. Fractures and life threatening injuries to the central nervous system can also occur.

Survey Said

A survey of four mixed martial arts tournaments over a four-month period revealed 103 episodes of cervical neck injury in 427 respondents. Five cases required hospitalization and resulted in neurological deficit. The researchers found that the motion and forces applied to the cervical spine were characteristic of whiplash produced by vehicle impacts.

Neck Injury

The risk of cervical neck injury, from mild whiplash to quadriplegia is high in all forms of martial arts, caused by situations such as hyper-flexion of the cervical spine on landing on the mat; or lateral flexion of the cervical spine and forced shoulder depression, resulting in a traction injury to the brachial plexus and soft-tissue injury to the paraspinal muscles.

Blood Clots

If a regular martial arts participant complains of generalized, inexplicable arm pain, it should be taken seriously as a possible presentation of Paget-Schroetter syndrome(12). This condition, also known as 'effort thrombosis', occurs in athletes who under-take repetitive arm movements. The pressure of the repeated action can cause blood clots in the axillary veins under the clavicle, producing thrombosis, pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary embolism.

Nerves, Bones, Discs damage to C4, C5

The majority of the radicular signs and symptoms are from the fourth and fifth cervical root. The roentgen graphic changes are most common at the fourth and fifth intervertebral disk spaces. Most of the cases respond well to adjustments and simple cervical collar and cervical traction.

Boxer's whiplash

It is the hyperextension/hyperflexion injury of the neck, and the resulting symptoms of this injury - sustained from not only a motor vehicle accident but also from boxing. This forwards-flexion and/or backwards-extension of the neck essentially results in a soft tissue sprain/strain injury to the structures within the cervical and upper thoracic spinal regions. When the initial impact occurs and the head is forced in either excessive flexion or excessive extension, protective reflexes cause the muscles of the neck to forcefully contract which "whips" the head back in the opposite direction. The resulting injury often leads to numerous symptoms, many of which are confusing and poorly understood. There may be signs of venous obstruction such as pain, swelling and bluish discoloration. If suspected, the fighter needs urgent attention for clot-busting treatment - and this is likely to end their athletic career.
