Understanding Scoliosis
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a neuro-musculo-skeletal disorder that can cause the vertebrae in the spine to laterally curve and rotate.
Neurological disorder can also cause hormonal imbalance which can contribute to the development of scoliosis.
It is thought that scoliosis is the result of a hereditary problem, hormonal, or an adaptation to some type of trauma, such as the birth process, or an injury, such as falling off a bicycle.
The problem usually starts in the lower back and mid-back.
Because spinal bones continue to grow well into the early 20s, if left uncorrected, scoliosis often worsens.
Unfortunately, the most common treatment approach has been to wait and see how bad it will get, resorting to unsightly braces, or eventually surgery, if it progresses too far.
Most of the scoliosis are classified as “Idiopathic Scoliosis” or unknown cause scoliosis. There is also “Congenital Scoliosis” which usually occurs due to congenital anomalies of the vertebrae or ribs.
Three Types of Scoliosis
With in classification of Idiopathic Scoliosis there are three types:
Infantile Idiopathic Scoliosis:
This occurs between birth and 3 years of age.
Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis:
This occurs between the ages of 3 through 10 with an average age of 7.
This type can lead to severe lateral curvature and upward of 30% will eventually have corrective surgery.
Bones and Beyond Scoliosis Method, powered by CLEAR Institute, can correct this type of scoliosis early so that surgery can be avoided in the near future.
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis:
This occurs between ages of 10 and skeletal maturity. The most common type of Idiopathic Scoliosis is Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.
